두 가지 항목 중

첫번째는 one, 다른 하나(두번째)는 the other.

One lives in Rome and the other lives in Paris.

One is new and the other is old.

​

I have two apples.

One is red, and the other is green.

나는 사과를 두개 가지고 있는데,

하나는 빨간색이고 하나는 초록색이야.

사과가 몇개인지 정확히 모르는 경우.

I ate one apple.

Then I ate another apple.

사과의 개수가 몇 개 인지 구체적으로 알 수 있는 경우.

5개일 때 하나와와 나머지 4개

I am holding one apple.

I'm going to hold the other apples.

​

정확히 몇 개인지 알 수 없는 경우.

하나와 몇 개인지 모르는 나머지 사과들.

​

I am holding one apple.

There are other apples on a plate.

살짝 헷갈릴 수 있는 표현들도 한 번 알아볼까요?

지정된 물건을 말할 때는 the others(복수형)이 아닙니다.

​

Some scientists think we should reduce the number of flights to prevent global warming; others disagree.

Not: … other disagree.

동의하지않는 사람들도 있습니다.

다른사람들은 동의하지 않습니다.

I’ve posted the first package. What shall I do with that other package?

Not: What shall I do with other package?

Other는 단수 계산 가능한 명사 앞에 올 때 그 앞에 한정사가 있어야 합니다

​

​

There is another car park a little further down the same street.

Not: There is an other car park …

an other은 띄어쓰지 않아요.

​

​

Other interesting places to visit include the old harbour and the castle.

Not: Another interesting places to visit …

Another 은 단수이며, 복수명사와 사용하지 않습니다.
